Heel Carving
I do most of my carving with rotary tools and not knives. I draw a pattern for one side on paper and then duplicate it with a copier for the other side. I assemble the two-sided pattern to fit over the heel of the neck (like a sock). When I get it to fit properly, I use a common lead pencil and color the back side of the pattern and tape it securely in place on the heel of the neck. I then trace over my lines on the pattern which transfers my pattern onto the heel wood for carving. I use a number of different shape cutting burs to carve out the pattern..
